Koh Russei

Less than an hour by boat from Sihanoukville, tiny Koh Russei (Bamboo Island) was cleared of most resorts in preparation for a high-end development – a five-star Alila Hotels (www.alilahotels.com) resort – that is still in the construction phase.

Most boat day trips from Sihanoukville call in at Koh Russei as part of their itinerary.

Koh Thmei

The large island of Koh Thmei is part of Ream National Park. There’s only one resort on the island, German-managed Koh Thmei Resort (%097 7370400; www.koh-thmei-resort.com; bungalows US$35, f US$60). It’s a real gem with super-simple bungalows, which use solar-panels and biofuel for electricity, that are just right for the setting. The resort sits on a great beach, and you can easily walk to several more, plus go sea-kayaking or snorkelling (visibility varies). Khmer meals are tasty and cost US$6.

Getting here requires private transport to the mainland fishing village of Koh Kchhang; turn off the NH4 in the town of Bat Kokir, about 12km east of Sihanoukville airport. From Koh Kchhang the resort is a 1¼ hour boat ride (six-passenger boat US$15). Koh Thmei Resort can organise pick-ups from Sihanoukville, as well as the boat ride.
